Pixelate
Low-resolution pixel art with a massive pixel grid and chunky 8-bit retro arcade look.

When to pick it
Pixelate pushes the pixel look further: a massive pixel grid and a chunky retro arcade feel, where the whole design is built from very few large squares. Up close it is almost abstract; from a distance, the building snaps into shape. The effect is bold, graphic and slightly cheeky, and it works well for images that need to be recognized at thumbnail size.
When to use it
- profile images, icons and small social thumbnails
- teaser posts that hint at a project before the full reveal
- posters and merchandise for game-themed events
- playful wayfinding or signage concepts
- design talks about abstraction and how much information a building needs to stay recognizable
It differs from Pixel Art by working at a much coarser grid, so it is about the silhouette, not the details. If a building is still recognizable at this level, its form is doing a lot of work.
What it does to materials and light
At this resolution, materials become single colored blocks. A whole wall may be one pixel column, a window a single bright square. Light appears as a few value steps between neighboring blocks, so the lit side of a building is one tone and the shaded side another. Sky and ground often reduce to two or three bands, which makes the building's outline the main subject.
Tips for better results
- Use buildings with iconic, simple silhouettes, like towers, gables or arches.
- Front views and elevations work better than complex perspectives.
- Strong contrast between building and sky keeps the shape readable.
- Keep prompts minimal; extra detail has nowhere to go at this scale.
- Check the result at the size it will be shown, as the effect changes with viewing distance.
Pixelate works in Elevation to Render, Text to Render and Image to Render.

- Elevation to RenderTurn a 2D elevation drawing into a photorealistic facade render, and try materials, context and light before you present.

- 3D Model to RenderTurn a view of your 3D model from SketchUp, Rhino, Revit or Blender into a photorealistic render, ready for client review.
