Massing

The overall shape and volume of a building before the details: how big, how tall, how it sits on the site. Massing studies are the first images in most projects.

Massing describes a building as simple volumes: how big it is, how tall, how it steps, where it is cut away and how it sits among its neighbors. Massing studies are usually built as plain blocks, physical or digital, without windows or materials, so attention stays on form, height and footprint. They respond to zoning limits such as height, setbacks and floor area ratio, to sun and views, and to the scale of the surrounding streets.

How it shows up in a project

  • Several massing options are typically compared at concept design stage, often in the same aerial view.
  • Shadow studies test how each option affects neighbors and public space at different times of year.
  • Plain white or single-material models are standard, since materials distract from the comparison.
  • Planners and community groups often respond first to massing, so a clear image of height and bulk in context matters.
  • Keep the camera and light identical across options so differences come from the design.

In Rendair

A screenshot of a massing model from SketchUp, Rhino or any other tool can go into 3D Model to Render to see the volume with materials and context, which helps a client imagine the finished building from a block model. Keeping the result simple, or using a drawn style, stops a massing render from looking more decided than it is. Design to Maquette gives a physical model look that suits early studies.
