Write better prompts for architectural renders

A simple, layered way to write prompts: image type, subject, architecture, context, camera, mood, palette and style.

Two things shape your results the most: the AI model you choose and the prompt you write. The prompt is where you have the most control. Instead of writing one long sentence and hoping for the best, think of your prompt as a design brief and build it in layers.

Build your prompt in layers

  1. Image type. Say what kind of image you want: an architectural photograph, a visualization, a drone shot or an interior photo.
  2. Subject. Name what you are designing, such as a contemporary winery, a mountain cabin or a beachfront villa. This is far stronger than "modern building."
  3. Architecture. Spend most of your prompt here. Describe the forms, structure, roof type, glazing and anything that makes the project unique.
  4. Materials. Cover the facade, glazing, roof, paving and other important finishes.
  5. Context. Place the building somewhere: vineyards, a pine forest, a rocky coastline, a dense city or a steep site.
  6. Camera. Choose how you look at the project: eye level, drone view, wide angle or telephoto.
  7. Mood. Describe the light and atmosphere, such as golden hour, a foggy morning or blue hour.
  8. Color palette. Add a simple palette like warm earthy tones or minimal Scandinavian colors to keep the image consistent.
  9. Quality and style. Finish with terms like editorial architectural photography, ultra realistic or highly detailed.

Start simple and build up

You do not have to put everything into the first prompt. Many people generate a clean architectural render first, then build on it step by step: Populate Render to add people, Change Time of Day for lighting, Change Material for new finishes and Edit Canvas for precise edits. Each edit focuses on one aspect while the rest of the image stays consistent.

Tips

  • Prompting is iterative. Generate, review, then adjust one or two things.
  • Sometimes more detail helps; other times a simpler prompt gives a stronger result.
  • Changing a single word can change the result.
  • Different models interpret prompts differently. If the prompt feels right but the result is not, try another model before rewriting everything.

What to do next

Read the model selection guide, then practice the layered approach in Image to Render or Sketch to Render.
