Answer
Short answer:
For the 3D Base to Render workflow, you need a screenshot, not a 3D model file. You simply upload a 2D image export (such as a JPG or PNG) of your model's viewport to guide the AI.
However if you prefer, you can also upload your 3D Model file to 3D Base to Render or Insert and Modify tools for better control.
1/ Why screenshots replace model files
Rendair AI is designed to be software-agnostic. By using screenshots rather than native 3D files (like .skp, .rvt, or .pln), the platform eliminates compatibility issues between different modeling programs.
Whether you work in SketchUp, Revit, Rhino, Archicad, or Blender, the workflow remains exactly the same. You position your camera in your modeling software, capture the view, and that image serves as the geometric foundation for the AI. This approach allows you to move from a massing model to a photorealistic visualization in seconds without worrying about polygon counts, texture mapping exports, or file conversion errors.
2/ How the workflow operates
The process relies on visual interpretation rather than geometry processing.
Capture your view: Position your 3D model in your preferred software. Ensure the angle and composition are exactly how you want the final render to look.
Save as image: Export that view as a standard image file or take a high-quality screenshot.
Upload to Rendair: Drag and drop this image into the 3D Base to Render slot.
Describe and Generate: Add a text prompt describing the materials, lighting, and environment. The AI maps these details onto the structure provided in your screenshot.
3/ Supported file types and inputs
While the system does not process raw 3D geometry for this specific tool, it supports a wide range of standard image formats.
Supported Input Formats
JPG / JPEG
PNG
WEBP
TIFF
HEIC / AVIF
Single-page PDF (converting to JPG is recommended for best results)
File Constraints
Maximum file size: 16MB
Aspect ratio: The final output will match the aspect ratio of your uploaded screenshot.
> “We just need the visual data to understand the depth and structure. The AI handles the rest.”
4/ When to use textured vs. untextured screenshots
You can upload different types of screenshots depending on where you are in the design process.
Clay or White Mode: Upload a screenshot of an untextured white model. This is ideal for early concept stages where you want the AI to suggest materials based entirely on your prompt.
Textured Viewport: Upload a screenshot with basic textures applied in your modeling software. The AI will respect these color choices and material indications but will upgrade them to photorealistic quality.
Wireframe or Line Drawing: While possible, this is often better suited for the "Sketch to Render" tool. For "3D Base," solid geometry usually yields better depth interpretation.
5/ Important limitations
While using screenshots simplifies the workflow, there are a few factors to keep in mind for professional results.
Resolution matters: Even though the AI regenerates the image, a blurry or pixelated screenshot can make it difficult for the system to understand edges and details. Upload the clearest screenshot possible.
Fixed perspective: Because you are uploading a 2D image, you cannot rotate the camera after uploading. If you need a different angle, you must rotate the model in your software and upload a new screenshot.
3D File Exceptions: While the primary rendering workflow uses screenshots, specific "insert" or "modify" tools within the platform may support object files (like OBJ or FBX) for targeted edits, but general scene rendering relies on image inputs.
