Rendair AI supports OBJ, FBX, and STL formats for the Insert and Modify tools. These formats allow you to upload 3D geometry directly into the platform for precise object placement and manipulation within your rendered scenes.
Overview
While most Rendair AI workflows, such as 3D Base to Render, Image to Render or Elevation to Render rely on 2D screenshots or exported images of your models, but the 3D Base to Render and Insert and Modify tools function differently. They allow you to introduce actual 3D files into an existing image.
This distinction is important for workflow precision. When you upload a 3D file rather than a flat image, you gain the ability to position, rotate, and scale the object in 3D space relative to your scene before the AI renders it. This ensures that perspective, lighting, and shadows are calculated accurately based on the object's actual geometry, rather than just its 2D silhouette.
How it works
The process integrates standard 3D assets into your AI visualization workflow:
Select the Tool: Choose the Insert or Modify tool within the Rendair interface.
Upload 3D File: Instead of an image, upload one of the supported 3D formats (e.g., an .obj chair).
Positioning: The platform provides a viewport where you can adjust the orientation and scale of the model to fit the perspective of your base image.
Generation: Once positioned, the AI renders the object into the scene, blending it with the existing lighting and style.
Supported Formats
Rendair supports a broad range of industry-standard formats to ensure compatibility with most modeling software, from SketchUp and Revit to Rhino and Blender.
OBJ (.obj): A universally accepted format. Best for static geometry and widely supported by almost every 3D modeling application.
FBX (.fbx): Ideal for transferring models that may contain more complex data. It is a standard in visualization workflows.
STL (.stl): Common in 3D printing but useful here for raw geometry imports where surface texture is less critical than shape.
IFC (.ifc): The standard for BIM (Building Information Modeling). This allows you to export elements directly from Revit or ArchiCAD without converting to a mesh format first.
STEP (.stp, .step) & IGES (.igs, .iges): Precision CAD formats. These are useful if you are working with manufactured product models or engineering data.
3DS (.3ds): A legacy format still commonly found in older furniture and asset libraries.

Limitations or notes
File Size: The 10MB limit means this workflow is optimized for individual objects (furniture, decor, architectural components) rather than full building models.
Geometry Only: While some formats support textures, the primary purpose of this tool is to provide the AI with shape guidance. The final material look is largely determined by the AI generation process to ensure it matches the lighting of the base image.
Complex Meshes: Extremely high-poly meshes may need to be decimated (simplified) in your modeling software before upload to meet the file size requirement.
